Communications Intern - Spring 2019 (Early January - May)

The National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC) at John Jay College seeks a part-time or full-time student intern to support its Communications team. NNSC supports cities to implement and advance proven strategies that reduce violence and improve public safety, minimize arrest and incarceration, strengthen communities, and improve relationships between law enforcement and communities.

The Communications team provides cross-cutting support to each of NNSC’s programmatic teams. In particular, the communications team drafts newsletters and articles, manages NNSC’s social media channels, attends events, and handles press inquiries from local and national publications.

Our team seeks an intern who has experience writing in academic and technical settings, creating content that highlights otherwise dense or heavy topics and working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The intern’s primary responsibilities will include writing, reading, editing, and communicating with our team and national partners. We will assign our intern other responsibilities based on their specific skills, and we plan to discuss that in detail during the interview process.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching and compiling criminal justice-related content for NNSC newsletters
  • Creating compelling content for social media and websites
  • Editing and copyediting
  • Supporting maintenance of an organizational database
  • Communicating with our national partners by email and phone

Necessary Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in communications, media studies, journalism, or related field
  • Alternately, professional experience with similar responsibilities
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Drive
  • Strong writing and editorial skills
  • Strong sense of professionalism and discretion
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of criminal justice issues
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and communicate effectively with others

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Photoshop)
  • Also relevant: experience with web design, graphic design, print material layouts
  • Experience with publicity or media relations
  • Researching and compiling target lists, drafting pitches, professional correspondence
  • Experience with social media and online publishing platforms (i.e. Tweetdeck, MailChimp)

Salary

The NNSC seeks to support interns seeking college credit for their internship hours. To qualify for college credit, students are responsible for obtaining advance approval from their institution for using their internship for college credit while at the NNSC. Please obtain this approval before your interview and be prepared to provide proof of eligibility.
